The ICC T20 Cricket World Cup is an international tournament held every two years under the aegis of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The first Men’s ICC T20 World Cup Edition was held in South Africa in 2007, wherein India lifted the trophy. The Men’s 2024 ICC T20 Cricket World Cup was held in the United States and the West Indies from 2 June to 29 June 2024. In an enthralling final, India beat South Africa by 7 runs to lift the trophy. The First Winner India (2007)
The first edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was played in South Africa. India faced Pakistan in the final, under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, won the toss and elected to bat first. India could muster 157 in 20 overs. Gautam Gambhir, with a crucial 75 off 54 balls, set the platform.
Later, Misbah hit three massive sixes off Harbhajan in the 17th over, while Sohail Tanvir also hammered two sixes off Sreesanth in the 18th over. RP Singh then gave an unmatched over, conceding only seven runs with two to go and 20 required. Finally, Joginder Sharma finished it with a five-run win in his last over. This win became historic as India was the first-ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup titleholders. The victory was historic in the context of Indian cricket and also became the first for the T20 World Cup winners List.

Comeback of Pakistan (2009)
On June 21, 2009, Sri Lanka and Pakistan squared off in the 2009 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The match took place at Lord’s. Pakistan won the second edition of the competition by eight wickets. This victory earned them the title of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Winners for the first time.
With 138/6 in their 20 overs, Sri Lanka set a challenging target for Pakistan. Shahid Afridi scored the game-winning runs as Pakistan completed the target runs in 18.4 overs. Afridi was crowned Man of the Match, and Tillakaratne Dilshan was named Man of the Series. The triumph was therefore a belated reward fully earned after consistent good form, putting Pakistan in the increasing list of T20 World Cup winners.
First Victory Of England (2010)
England and Australia faced each other on May 16, 2010, in the 2010 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2010 Final at Bridgetown’s Kensington Oval in Barbados. In the third edition of the competition, England won by seven wickets to claim their first ICC Trophy.
Australia posted 147 for 6 in their 20 overs to set a challenging target for England. Pietersen and Kieswetter had produced a dominant 111-run second-wicket stand, after England’s first wicket was lost early on. Morgan and Collingwood then completed the chase with three overs to spare. Pietersen was awarded Player of the Tournament, and Kieswetter was awarded Man of the Match for his maiden half-century in international T20 cricket. This victory was a landmark for England as it opened the gates in English cricket in the shortest format, laying down the fact that England was capable and could hold hands with the best in the shortest form of the game.

Champion West Indies (2012)
At the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the West Indies beat Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2012 Final. The West Indies won their first World T20 title in the fourth edition of the tournament, their first top prize since the 2004 ICC World Championship Trophy.
West Indies scored 108 runs in the last ten overs and ended at 137 for 6. Sri Lanka was tightly batted down by eight overs to 39 for one, even with Kumar Sangakkara’s best efforts. Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka’s highest run-scorer, scored 33 runs, and Sunil Narine produced a monstrous spell of 9-3 in 3.4 overs. Samuel picked 1-15 in his four overs and scored crucial runs with the bat to become the Man of the Match. This victory was the beginning of their domination in this format, making them a household name among the T20 World Cup champions.
Sri Lanka Trophy Drought Ended (2014)
Sri Lanka and India clashed on April 6, 2014, in the 2014 ICC Men’s World T20 Final at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. Sri Lanka defeated India in the fifth edition of the tournament, marking their first-ever T20 World Cup title.
Sri Lanka, with this win, claimed their first major trophy after the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002. The match was attended by 25,000 fans.
The Player of the Match award was given to Kumar Sangakkara for winning the match for Sri Lanka. It was the last T20 International for Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Sri Lanka chose to field first after winning the toss. During the 2014 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final, Mahela Jayawardene made history when he became the first batter to achieve a thousand runs. They were thrilled at winning the match, which put Sri Lanka among the T20 World Cup winners list.

Second Title of West Indies (2016)
The West Indies played against England in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2016 on April 3, 2016, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The West Indies became the first side to reach this landmark by winning their second ICC World T20 title by four wickets.
After they finished their 20 overs, England stood at 155/9 but were being kept scared by the depth of the West Indies’ batting. Man of the Match was given to Samuel after he scored an unbeaten 85 from 66 balls, a record score in the history of the T20 World Cup.
After their triumph, the West Indies became the first side to win two T20 World Cups. This thriller of a finish established the West Indies as a force to be reckoned with and created another notch on the T20 World Cup winners list for their name.
Australia’s First Victory (2021)
The seventh ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was conducted in Oman and the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 14, 2021. The match was initially scheduled to be conducted in Australia in 2020 but was rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, due to pandemic concerns, it was necessary to change from India to the United Arab Emirates.
Australia won its first T20 World Cup by defeating New Zealand by eight wickets in the final. Player of the Match was awarded to Mitchell Marsh, while David Warner was given Player of the Tournament. With this victory, Australia’s ICC trophy collection was complete, showcasing their diversity in world cricket’s shortest format and leaving their mark in the T20 World Cup winners list.
Second Win For England (2022)
England and Pakistan met in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, hosted at the MCG in Melbourne, Australia, on November 13, 2022. Both teams were competing for their second ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title.
After their victory in the 2019 Cricket World Cup Final, England’s victory made the team the first team in men’s cricket to be crowned both T20 and 50-over World Cup champions at the same time. Second Trophy For India (2024)
No Indian can ever forget this brilliant victory, which ended India’s 11-year-long ICC Trophy drought on 29th June 2024. The game was going South Africa’s way, but Suryakumar Yadav’s catch of David Miller at long on and a match-defining over of Hardik Pandya, took the trophy from the Proteas by 7 runs.
